If you are thinking about starting a business, your life is about to change. Your priorities, energy, time and money will not be going to the same places they have been previously. It truly is a huge commitment and one that can leave you hurting for years to come if you don’t start the right business for you. Therefore it is important to know how to figure out if you have the selected a business that is a good fit or not.

Talk with a trusted mentor, a business coach or a small business advisor. Bring your business plan with you and outline your plan completely. Take notes of questions the other person brings up. Be completely honest. This is your opportunity to see if this new business is a good choice for you. Be sure to directly ask the question “Do you think I am starting the right business for me?” Listen to the response and take notes of why or why not.

Do a self-evaluation. Ask yourself several questions. Be honest. Write down the answers.

1.    Do I know this industry well? Do I need to learn more or obtain new skills before I start the business?
2.    Am I willing to spend at least 60 hours a week working if that is what it takes?
3.    Do I have the finances to start this business without creating an unnecessary hardship for myself or my family?
4.    If I don’t start this business, will I always regret it? If I fail at this business and go into debt, will I always regret it?

Starting a new business is exciting, but make sure reality reigns. Listen to those who express concern about your new venture. They may have valid points. However, if after all these things, you are confident that this is the right business for you, good luck and get started.
