Starting a Business – Franchise or Independent
Starting a business is always a big decision and sometimes a hard one to make. The decision can be made even harder of you are trying to decide whether you should buy a franchise or open an independent business. Both will come with good and bad points, so before you decide you should visit both options in depth.
Franchise
A franchise is great in many ways. For one, a franchise already comes with instant recognition. So, people will already know what your business is about as soon as the doors are open.
A franchise also allows you to open up your business in a turn-key fashion as everything you need in order to get set up will be provided for you. This allows you to save time and energy when setting up shop.
However, franchises also come with a great deal more in costs. First of all, you have to buy the franchise rights and then you have to continue to pay in order to be a part of the franchise moving forward.
Independent
While franchises already have the way for you to operate mapped out, some don’t like that approach. With an independent business, you can operate as you see fit as there will be no corporate office to answer to.
Additionally, an independent business is one that can be started without having to pay for any rights. So, an independent business is more cost effective, at least to get off the ground.
However, independent businesses carry no name recognition. Some people will always go for a burger at the big name place that they see all around versus your ‘mom and pop’ burger joint.
In the end it really all comes down to a personal preference. Money also plays a role, but in order to determine what is best for your business start-up you should look closely at all aspect of both buying a franchise and starting an independent business.
